Sometimes what looks like a single problem ends up being several. That's exactly what happened here. We got called out for an AC system that wasn't performing, and once we started digging in, it became clear this wasn't a simple fix.

We used a megohm meter to test the compressor's motor windings - a standard diagnostic step that tells us a lot about the health of the compressor. The reading came back in the bad range, well below where it needs to be. A failed compressor on its own is already a costly repair. But we weren't done finding issues.

We also ran a refrigerant leak check using an Inficon TEK-Mate detector. It's one of the most reliable tools in the industry for sniffing out leaks, and it flagged a problem at the unit. Between the compressor failure and the refrigerant leak, the customer was looking at stacking repairs on an already aging system.

That's when the honest conversation has to happen. Pouring money into a compressor replacement and a leak repair on a system that's already struggling doesn't always make financial sense. In this case, moving toward a full system replacement was the smarter, more reliable path forward for the customer.

We never push replacement when a repair will do the job. But when the numbers don't add up and the system keeps showing problems, it's our job to lay out all the options clearly and let you make an informed decision. That's what good AC repair and maintenance service looks like.
